this week-end i was watching the news and i heard about this survey that was taken in 1987 thru 2006, in colleges. the survey was about how narcissist we are. in 1987 the percentage was 28 and in 2006 it was 60%. this troubled me, because if we are only thinking of ourselves then what will happen to our world. why arent we thinking of the person beside us, the total stranger walking pass us at wal-mart, the man on the corner with the sign in his hand. why are we so self-centered, that we are not even aware of our near destruction of everything that we covent. i realize that we live in a fast pace world, a dog eat dog lifestyle. but why cant we change this, why cant we make the effort to soften our hearts for other people. i hope who reads this understands that this is just an open dicussion. im not expecting answers to help me. but i do hope you as the reader take this serious...The state of our world...going down the tube or is this the yo-yo effect?
You do tend to wonder what the world is coming to I suppose. I think we do live in such a fast paced world like you said and with the advancement of technology there is less drive to make personal connections when you can just go home and communicate anonymously with the whole world. You can't make everybody see your point of view but you can work on yourself to make it a more compassionate world. Just smiling at someone can make another person's day and even being the one to initiate a shared smile with a stranger can lift your mood substantially when you see the other person's eyes light up as they return it =)
